Cortona is the most famous town in the Val di Chiana: fortress enclosed between ancient walls, built between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC, Cortona is rich in monuments of high historical and cultural interest dating back to different eras: Etruscan, Roman and medieval art dominates.
Its main square, an excellent starting point for atourof the city, is Piazza della Repubblica, where the Town Hall (XII century) is located. A few meters away is Piazza delduomo, where the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta stands out, built on the remains of oneRomanesque parish churchfrom the 11th century, inside which you can admire the famous painting on canvas "Adoration of the Shepherds" by Pietro da Cortona, dated 1663.
In front of the cathedral is theMuseoDiocesan, where numerous works are collected including the "Annunciation" ofFra Angelico. Cortona is also an open-air museum.
